Hello my friends,

As sad as I am that we have arrived at the last week of work together, I am immensely proud of you for your hard work this summer. Thanks for your participation and your contribution to the Community Spanish Program!

I invite you to attend our final excursion which is a celebration dinner at La Especial Norte on Thursday July 27th at 8:00 PM. As an excursion, this dinner will provide you an opportunity to practice Spanish! The restaurant's management has happily agreed to pair us with a Spanish-speaking waiter who will help you order in Spanish! Click here for information on the restaurant. Please RSVP using the form below.

Class Preparation Work

  1. Please read chapters 10, 11, 12, and 13 and take note of new vocabulary and questions you have. We will read the end of the book together in class. (If you would like some extra feedback, write a summary of what we read this week and bring it to class. I will read and respond to your work!)
  2. In a comment below, post a piece of your final elevator pitch on which you would like some feedback. Respond to somebody else’s post with a glow and a grow. We will give our presentations together in class for more feedback and practice.

What is an elevator pitch? How do you give an effective, impactful, and brief presentation on something important? To prepare for our assessment, watch this video in Spanish and list tips en español on how to give an elevator pitch. Don't forget about our reading from La hija del sastre!

Final Assessment Instructions

The participant will choose one subject based on her personal objective created in week one of class. She will give a 2-4 minute presentation in the form of an "elevator pitch" on a subject of her choice similar to the type of interaction she hopes to have with someone out in the community about government, civic duty, immigration, or law-related subjects. She must  use at least 10 new vocabulary words and all of the target language structures from class in this presentation. Finally, she will write a Facebook Post in Spanish and English in which she explains the significance of this subject in a more succinct way.

Excursion Reminder

This week on Wednesday the 28th of June we will be meeting at 2:00 PM at the Living Coast Discovery Center for a tour in Spanish! I have organized this outing for all students of the Community Spanish Program, and is free with admission to the Discovery Center. If you plan on attending, email me in advance so that we can make sure to wait for you at the entrance.

Class Preparation Work

There are two assignments for this week:
  1. First, read Chapter one of La hija del sastre. Make a list of phrases and words related to political action and civic duty from Chapter One.
  2. Second, bring in a copy of your personal objective statement from class to submit to me. I will be providing feedback and using them to help guide upcoming class discussions.
