The Community Spanish Program 

Program Mission

The Community Spanish Program helps learners become bilingual through input-based, contextualized, responsive instruction. Welcoming students from all backgrounds, the program goal is to foster cultural appreciation, respect, and community building through 21st Century language instruction. By arming students with Spanish-language proficiency, the Community Spanish Program aims to build community among the diverse peoples and cultures of San Diego county.

Class Descriptions

The Community Spanish Program is excited collaborate with Pilgrim UCC to offer a comprehensive class schedule in one centralized location starting in October of 2018.

Group Classes

Group classes last an hour and consist of 6 to 12 participants. Classes meet weekly during the fall, spring, and summer. There are 4 levels of classes that focus on student-selected topics and themes: Complete Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced.

​Cost: $15 - $20 per class

Individual Sessions

Individual sessions are small classes or tutoring sessions with 1 to 3 participants. Classes are designed to respond to student needs and vary in length and duration. Individual sessions start at any time during the year and meet when participants decide.

Cost: $75 per hour

Trainings

Professional trainings are available on request for public and private institutions. Classes range in focus from Spanish for educational purposes to Spanish for the medical field. Please contact the program for specific inquiries.

Early Childhood Education

In collaboration with preschools and elementary schools, the Community Spanish Program offers weekly or biweekly afternoon courses designed to promote literacy and creativity in students ages 3 to 5.

In collaboration with elementary schools, the Community Spanish Program offers weekly or biweekly afternoon courses designed to promote literacy and critical thinking in students ages 6 to 12.

Instructional Approach

The instructional approach behind all classes, tutoring, and events is based on 21st century research on second language acquisition. In other words, the teaching methods used are cutting edge and highly effective. Leveraging participants' interests, backgrounds, and personal goals, program offerings are designed for participants to learn Spanish fast. Classes focus on providing comprehensible input in Spanish so that participants first learn how to hear, read, and understand. Then, sentence stems and target vocabulary are provided as tools for participants to start using Spanish in contextualized situations. Rather than memorizing grammar and practicing drills, learners grow and acquire language over time by developing communication skills around different themes and topics depending on individual needs. While each course is unique in the thematic focus, instructional elements are the same throughout all courses: 
Workshop-Style Classes
  • Teacher-guided instruction: storytelling, comprehensible input
