Hello my friends,

As sad as I am that we have arrived at the last week of work together, I am immensely proud of you for your hard work this summer. Thanks for your participation and your contribution to the Community Spanish Program!

I invite you to attend our final excursion which is a celebration dinner at La Especial Norte on Thursday July 27th at 8:00 PM. As an excursion, this dinner will provide you an opportunity to practice Spanish! The restaurant's management has happily agreed to pair us with a Spanish-speaking waiter who will help you order in Spanish! Click here for information on the restaurant. Please RSVP using the form below.

Class Preparation Work

  1. Read chapters 8 and 9 of Esperanza. In a comment to this post, type one favorite quote (cita) from the two chapters, an explanation of the context surrounding the quote, and a brief reasoning for which you chose the quote. Some useful sentence stems to analyze the quote are, "En esta cita, lo que ocurre es que..." and "Yo escogí esta cita porque..."
  2. Review the new vocabulary in the short book "Subimos" below.
  3. Study and memorize the questions and answers we developed in class. You will find those listed in the image below. Feel free to save that image to your computer, or print it out!

 Hola mis queridas,

To prepare for our long class this week (starting at 6:00 PM), please read review the video assignment from last week and refresh your memory to prepare for a class discussion. This will help us spend some time reviewing the video and looking at key vocabulary we will use in class!

Very importantly, we need to spend some time reading our novel Esperanza so that we can finish it on time! For last week's class, you read chapters 4 and 5. To stay on track, please read chapter 6. Bring in any questions you have from any of these chapters to class on Thursday. As your last assignment, I would like you to respond in Spanish to each of the five questions below about the chapters we have read outside of class. Please be prepared to submit those for feedback from me on your written Spanish.

Comprehension Questions: Esperanza

Along with reading the assigned chapters, please complete this assignment to prepare for class next week. For this assignment, you will be analyzing a video documentary comparing the public transportation systems in San Diego and Tijuana. First, view the video one time through. Then, read the questions and use them to better understand and analyze the video. Draft your responses in preparation for watching the video and discussing together in class.

  1. Using vocabulary from the video along with words you've learned, what modes of transportation do you see throughout the video? Make a list in Spanish.
  2. The interviewer asks residents of Tijuana what they think of the public transportation system. What are some of the adjectives you hear in the video from minute 1:10 until minute 2:30? Answer in Spanish or English.
  3. At minute 4:10, the video transitions to the city of San Diego. What does the phrase, "...el servicio de transport público en una ciudad de primer mundo," mean in English?
  4. From minute 4:35 until 5:25, the narrator describes the way people pay for public transportation using an electronic system. Using the context from the video, define each of the following words or phrases: tarjeta, abordar, manera electrónica, "no se utiliza el dinero en efectivo," depositar.
  5. From 5:25 until 6:25, the narrator talks about people with special needs. What words and phrases do you hear in Spanish that he uses to describe this service? How does he say this compares to Tijuana?
