Performance Assessment

In my classroom, assessment is continuous and task-oriented. Students use assessments as opportunities to demonstrate their learning through communicative tasks that provide them with opportunities to deepen their understanding of the language through a performance task. In order to achieve this, I use the IPA (Integrated Performance Assessment) model in which learners engage in an assessment over the course of a number of days. This process gives me usable data in terms of student growth and achievement.

Choice

As the driving force in my classroom, students are empowered to make certain decisions about the type of performance assessment tasks they will do. Within any IPA, student voice is central: Students express their views, opinions, and experiences through the assessment in order to create an authentic communicative experience.

Collaboration

During at least one portion of the IPA, students must work cooperatively with peers in a communicative activity. This promotes social and emotional development through language learning, which is key to helping students become globally competent communicators!
