I have taught English as a Second Language, primary math, and primary English Language Arts. However, the majority of my teaching experience has been as a Spanish teacher for all grades, Pre-K through 12th. My instructional approach places students' needs and cultures in the forefront of planning, teaching, and assessment. Each day of instruction is an opportunity to meet students where they are and empower them to think critically.
Through culturally-responsive teaching, I create safe and developmentally appropriate learning environments in which students engage in authentic practice using Spanish. As lessons come together around authentic practice, I focus on student collaboration in order to integrate social skills into language learning. |
Because I value arts-integrated education, music is key to building a fun and safe learning environment and is always a part of my lessons. I bring my musical background into the songs and chants I write to teach language structures. Further, I use music as a means of teaching culture and history as students analyze songs. I use music to relax, energize, and inspire students!
Using my education in regional studies of Latin America, I teach about the cultures and regions in which the language is spoken. I integrate relevant texts including articles, novels, and publications for all levels of Spanish speakers so that participants learn the language within the context of the culture it comes from. My goal is that students learn the "why" behind language so that they have a better understanding of the patterns and structure of Spanish.
Finally, assessment in my classroom is a constant and evolving process that invites learners to show what they know through performance assessments. I strive to provide equitable opportunities for students of all backgrounds to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, formative assessment happens throughout my instruction as I gather an analyze data on student performance.
