Bilingual Storybooks on Healthy Living: A Collaborative Literacy and Equity Project

3/11/2018

Students in my level two Spanish classes collaboratively wrote and illustrated bilingual storybooks about healthy routines. In Spanish, they developed characters, outlined plots, edited drafts, and illustrated as a team. As a last step, they translated books into English.

Students read their bilingual books to elementary students. By presenting their books in Spanish and English, students promoted equity for elementary students whose first language is Spanish. In addition to developing their own communication skills in Spanish, students were models of literacy to 1st graders.

As I work toward developing the perseverance and drive to achieve my goals, I am reading Grit by Angela Duckworth. My biggest learning so far has been the importance of identifying and defining my inner compass, "...the thing that takes you some time to build, tinnier with, and finally get right, and then that guides you on your long and winding road to where, ultimately, you want to be" (p. 60). I use this compass to set goals, plan my daily actions, and reflect.
